License To Spill Recap: Seafood & Fun in Hilton Head, SC!

The License to Spill tour hits Hilton Head!Thank you so much to everyone that stopped by the Hilton Head Seafood Festival this past Saturday and earned their very own “License to Spill” at our display!

Everyone was excited to meet Better Show correspondent Lesley Nagy and we were ready to have a true carpet showdown.

In addition to the License to Spill truck, red SmartStrand carpet to walk and eat on, we had plenty of quality mess-making supplies and plenty of willing participants.

We found some delicious albeit stain-prone food in hearty seafood gumbo provided by Chef Patrick Ward of Hudson’s Resturant. A special thank you also goes out to our blogger friends As The Bunny Hops, Military Travel Mama, Wee Share!

Here are some great shots taken during our Hilton Head stop from the License to Spill album. We are not the only ones who love making a mess on SmartStrand…

The License to Spill truck and red SmartStrand carpet are ready for visitors. We call this picture the calm before the storm:

Chocolate syrup, grape juice, and blue Gatorade are all typical household offenders. We gave all visitors their very own license to spill and the means to do so!

We let visitors of all ages (see the top photo!) try to mess up our SmartStrand, but in the end they were no match for our easy-to-maintain carpet. Don't forget, unlike other carpets on the market today, SmartStrand has built in stain and soil resistance that lasts for life!

The License to Spill truck moves on and the next stop is Atlanta, GA on April 20th, 2013. We're coming down south and we want to see you! Come visit our SmartStrand and help us make the best mess possible...

Mohawk and The Better Show Hit the Road for National Tour Event

The License To Spill tour is coming to a city near you!
Everyone likes a good road trip! We’re partnering with The Better Show, a nationally syndicated lifstyle television program, and heading out on a coast-to-coast License to Spill tour.

That’s right, we’re making stops at six cities this spring, and six more in the fall, to showcase the amazing performance of SmartStrand with DuPont Sorona carpet at some of the most exciting festivals and home show events.

Look for the colorful License To Spill truck at your closest stop on the tour as we hunt for the most delicious and messiest food that every city has to offer. Think that food and carpet are an odd combination? Not for SmartStrand!

We will be rolling out the SmartStrand red carpet and putting this amazing carpet's built-in stain and soil protection to the test. We’re showing America that it is possible to enjoy a great meal on a luxurious, comfortable surface.

The License to Spill tour kicked off Saturday, March 23 at the New England Home Show in Foxborough, Massachussets. HGTV designer Taniya Nayak was in attendance, meeting with fans and offering design advice. As always, she was thrilled to discuss the amazing peformance of SmartStrand carpet.

Therefore, as you select the perfect shade and pattern that will bring your design to life, you can rest assured that the color will shine for years of dazzling style.

Keep Your Carpet Looking Good: What You Need to Know

The proper care will keep your carpet shining.

Picking the perfect carpet for your home is no easy task, but there is no better feeling than seeing your hard work pay off and beautiful new carpet installed in your home. New carpet breathes new life into every room, making it a warm, inviting, comfortable place to be.

Want to keep this feeling for a long time? Learning proper carpet maintenance will ensure that your floors shine for years to come.

Everyone knows that carpet must be cleaned, but the true knowledge comes from learning how to clean carpet and the best way to remove stains from carpet. Here’s a few tips and procedures from Mohawk Flooring that will help you preserve long-lasting appearance and ultimate satisfaction:

Vacuum Your Carpet Like A Pro: The best way to ensure long–lasting beauty, comfort and durability in your carpet is to vacuum it regularly, as it prevents soil from becoming embedded in the carpet’s pile. We have more tips on how to select a vacuum in the Mohawk Care + Maintenance section.

  • The type of carpet you have will determine whether you’ll want to use a vacuum with a rotating brush, a beater bar or suction only.

  • High pile or premium soft carpets will require the following features for proper vacuuming:
    - Adjustable Height (Use highest setting where appropriate)
    - Adjustable Fan Speed (Use a Medium or Low setting where appropriate)
    - Large Wheels

  • Consider professional cleaning every 12–18 months (Once every year of year and a half)

Tips For Every Carpet Situation: No matter what happens to your carpet, it will help you to have the proper procedure in place. Here’s a few helpful practices to know and this link can provide additional tips on maintaining carpet beauty http://www.carpet-rug.org.

  • For sprouts and snags, use scissors to clip; do not pull or you may damage the carpet.

  • For dents caused by heavy furniture, stroke carpet with the edges of a coin. You can also use a hair dryer or a steam iron to gently raise the dented area while you tug upward on the tufts. CAUTION: DO NOT LET THE IRON TOUCH THE CARPET.

  • For carpet that is burned, remove the tops of the dark, burnt fibers with curved fingernail scissors. If the burn is extensive, the carpet may require patching or replacement.

  • For carpet that experiences flooding from a burst pipe, washing machine overflow or other leak, the carpet needs to be dried, front and back, by a professional cleaner with the proper equipment.

Removing Common Stains From Carpets: A wet/dry vacuum cleaner is the best way to effectively remove stains and treatment of the stain should begin immediately upon discovery. Use the attachment with the best suction and vacuum as much of the stain as possible, continuing to add water to the stain as you go. For the best results, use Mohawk FloorCare Essentials Carpet Spot Remover and Cleaning Kit.

  • 1) Scrape the food spill gently with a spoon or dull knife, or a Mohawk FloorCare Essentials Carpet Cleaning Key, removing as much solid material as possible. If detergent is required, use sparingly and gently rinse the area with water while moving the vacuum wand back and forth. Use a towel to absorb all moisture.

  • 2) If spot removal solvent is necessary, use Mohawk FloorCare Essentials Spot Remover or other CRI-approved low residue carpet spot remover. Apply several drops to clean white cloth and blot the carpet in an inconspicuous area. If a color change occurs, consult a professional carpet cleaner.

  • 3) Place towels or cloth over wet area and weight with a heavy, colorfast object to absorb moisture and leave overnight.

  • 4) If stains remain after cleaning, moisten the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide and let stand for one hour. Blot and repeat until carpet is stain–free, no rinsing necessary. Apply a pad of paper towels and weigh them down, allowing carpet to dry.

  • 5) Some stains cannot be removed because they permanently alter the carpet’s color. For these stains, call a professional. In order to maintain and protect your warranty coverage under the terms of these warranties, you must do the following: A minimum of one professional cleaning every 18 months is required.

How to Choose the Right Vacuum for Your Carpet Type

Mohawk vacuum carpet

You took your time and used patience to carefully choose beautiful soft carpet throughout your home.

Now it’s time to pair the perfect vacuum with your specific Mohawk carpet type to keep your rooms looking great and to extend your carpet’s life.

Wait a minute, you have never considered how a vacuum might affect your carpet? Whether you choose the stain-free protection of PET, the durability of wear-free nylon, or the worry-free performance of SmartStrand, you’re premium carpet deserves the proper and utmost care which includes selecting the perfect vacuum.

Premium carpets that are used in bedrooms, such as SmartStrand Silk, vacuum differently than carpet that is not as luxuriously soft. Many Mohawk premium soft carpets contain two or three times the amount of fiber of ordinary soft yarns. This actually increases the carpet’s performance and durability, while maintaining the supreme softness.

It's all about tailoring your carpet maintenance to your particular carpet type and style. You can find specific details about your carpet type as well as cleaning instructions, spot removal tips and recommendations for normal care and maintenance inside the warranty brochure you received with your carpet purchase.

Treat your carpet well and it will remain showroom-worthy for years to come. The right vacuum will go a long way in ensuring it will and we’re here to review the essentials!

Learn More About Premium Soft Carpet Care

Remember this phrase: “All vacuums are not equal”. Since regular vacuuming is such an important part of carpet maintenance, it’s even more important to note that certain vacuums and their features work better than others for premium soft carpets.

Typically, a good vacuum will offer features such as allowing you to adjust the height, beater bar rotation and fan speed. Vacuums with large wheels, self-propelled vacuums or specialty tools will also make for effective carpet maintenance. Fiber type and construction will determine how your carpet needs to be vacuumed:

  • 1. High pile, wool, wool-blend, and premium soft carpets: Adjust height to highest setting, avoid vacuums with very contrated suction and use a vacuum with large wheels.

  • 2. Thick loop, casual frieze or long pile carpet such as “shag”: You may need to completely disengage the beater bar and vacuum carpet with suction only.

  • 3. All other carpet constructions not mentioned above: Use a vacuum with a rotating brush or beater bar. Change the bags often and check the beater bars for burs and gouges to prevent damage to the surface of the carpet.

When it comes to premium soft carpet offerings, the increased number of soft fibers can make some vacuums difficult to push. A recent trend by vacuum manufacturers is creating models with extremely high suction power. While high suction vacuums perform well on low pile carpets and hard surface flooring, this is not a good match for thicker, high pile carpets like SmartStrand Silk. When vacuuming premium soft carpets or high pile, wool or wool-blend look for these features:

  • Adjustable Height: Use the highest setting where appropriate

  • Efficient Airflow: Avoid vacuums with very concentrated or sealed suction

  • Large Wheels: Vacuum should glide easily across the carpet

Adjustable height is a crucial feature because this enables the machine to be used on a wide variety of carpet constructions. For the proper height setting, the beater bar or brush should just lightly touch your carpet surface.

If your vacuum is set too high above the carpet surface, the vacuum can’t attract the gritty soil below. Make sure it doesn’t dig into or gouge the carpet pile. If the setting is too low, the vacuum’s beater bar or brushes can “fuzz” the carpet’s surface, causing it to look worn and frayed. If you see any fraying or damage to the vacuumed area, change the setting or use a different vacuum on your carpet.

There’s no better feeling than sinking your feet into the ultra-plush comfort with every step on one of Mohawk’s luxurious premium soft carpets. Choosing the right vacuum will assist you in maintaining this cherished feeling throughout your beautiful home!

How to Easily Remove Nail Polish Stains from Your Carpet!

Even nail polish stains are no match for our carpet cleaning tips.
You are sitting in your living room watching the Rachael Ray show with Taniya Nayak on as a special guest. You are amazed by Taniya’s suggestions as you apply the latest great nail polish color on your fingernails.

Suddenly, your energetic family dog bounces towards you, knocking you off-balance and the beautiful polish on to your SmartStrand Silk carpet! Don’t laugh; this scenario can happen to even the most skillful of nail polish appliers.

We recently received an inquiry on our Mohawk Flooring Facebook page from a loyal Mohawk fan on how to remove nail polish stains from carpet. Hey, we understand that real life can strike at any time.

Luckily, we have 3 excellent carpet care procedures for how to treat the troublesome nail polish spill. Follow these steps and keep your carpet polish-free.

1. The product we recommend for treating nail-polish stains? Goo Gone ®. America’s #1 brand in tough removals, Goo Gone® products use citrus power to defeat the toughest sticky, gummy stains without harming the carpet below. You can purchase directly from the Goo Gone website and decide which product and size you like best.

2.
After following the cleaning procedure on the Goo Gone package, you can then perform the appropriate cleaning procedure from the following A, B and C procedures.

PROCEDURE A (for water-based, special water based and greasy, oil-based stains)
• Mix a solution of ¼ teaspoon of clear hand dishwashing detergent with 1 cup of water. Stir gently.
• Apply detergent solution directly to a white cloth. Dampen the carpet fibers in the stained area with the cloth. Avoid saturating the carpet.
• Wipe gently. Turn cloth frequently.
• Never rub, scrub or use a brush. This may damage carpet fibers. If necessary, use your fingertips to work the solution to the base of the stain. Do not over-saturate carpet; use small amounts of solution and blot frequently.
• Wet the stained carpet fibers with clear, lukewarm water to rinse.
• Cover the spot with an absorbent white towel or paper towel and apply pressure to blot.
• Repeat the rinsing and blotting procedures until you are sure all traces of the detergent have been removed.
• If the stain is gone, place an absorbent white towel or paper towel over the area cleaned, and weigh towels down with a heavy colorfast object, such as a weighted plastic wastebasket.
• Change towels or paper towels until carpet dries.
• If stain remains, perform Procedure B (for coffee, tea or urine, skip Procedure B and perform Procedure C).

PROCEDURE B (Do NOT use on coffee, tea or urine stains)
• Mix 2 tablespoons of non-bleaching, non-sudsing household ammonia with 1 cup of lukewarm water.
• Apply ammonia solution, rinse and blot as outlined in Procedure A.
• Do not dry with paper towels. Follow Procedure C to neutralize the ammonia solution.

     PROCEDURE C
• Mix ½ cup of white vinegar with 1 cup of lukewarm water.
• Apply vinegar solution, rinse and blot as outlined in Procedure A.

5 Tips for Removing Common Stains from Your Carpet

Protect your beautiful home with these great carpet cleaning tips

Yikes! Stains come without warning and often at the most inopportune times. If you have Mohawk SmartStrand then your home is already prepared for the worst offenders.

Also, Mohawk’s all natural line of FloorCare Essentials are perfect for on-the-spot carpet care (pun intended!) when you need it the most.

Here are some life-saving carpet cleaning tips to follow while defending your home against the most harmful mess-makers:

1. The Best Way to Remove Stains is with a Wet/Dry Vacuum Cleaner.
Vacuum as much of the stain as possible using the attachment with the best suction. Add water to the stain as you go and treat the stain as soon as possible. The more time that passes when a stain occurs, the more difficult it will be to remove from the carpeting.

2. First Scrape Spilled Food Gently With Spoon or Dull Knife
The goal of this step is to remove as much solid material as possible. Use any detergent sparingly and gently rinse the area with water while moving the vacuum wand back and forth. Afterward, use a towel to absorb all moisture.

3. Use A CRI-Approved Low Residue Carpet Spot Remover
Mohawk FloorCare Essentials Spot Remover makes an excellent choice for this step!

4. Place Towel Over Wet Area To Absorb Moisture
Put a heavy, colorfast object on top of the towel to weigh it down and absorb moisture. Leave this set-up in place overnight.

5. If Stain Remains, Use 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
After initial stain cleaning and if stain remains, moisten the tufts in the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide and let stand for one hour. No rinsing is necessary and repeat this step until carpet is stain–free. Put a pad of paper towels on top of the area and weigh them down to dry the carpet.

Here are some stains that might alter the color of your carpet permanently: Acid toilet bowl cleaners, acne medication, alkaline drain cleaners, chlorinated bleaches, hair dyes, iodine, insecticides, mustard with turmeric and plant fertilizers. In these cases, call a professional.

We want to hear from you! What is your most effective carpeting clean-up story? What are some of your carpet care commandments?
